We are going to the Westman Islands, an archipelago with 15 islands and rock formations, all of which were formed due to volcanic eruptions some 11,000 years ago. One exception is Surtsey Island, which emerged from the sea less than 60 years ago, in 1963! Heimaey Island, whose name translates to 'Home Island,' is the largest and the only inhabited island among the Westman Islands. Despite being just a few kilometers from the mainland, Heimaey Island feels like a whole other world. With its sweeping picture-perfect views and a feeling of remoteness, this is a place where life seems to have stood still. ITINERARY Itinerary: Reykjavik - ferry - Westman island Heimaey - Herjólfsdalur - Elephant rock - Eldfell volcano - rib ocean trip around island - ferry - Reykjavik Firstly, we will drive to the ferry. During our trip on it, you might encounter dolphins and whales. Our day's discoveries include: Herjólfsdalur : A truly beautiful valley that resembles a giant natural amphitheater, with rocks rising up on all sides. ​Elephant Rock: This beautiful mountain looks like an elephant and offers stunning views. Here, we will also find one of the most beautiful golf courses in the world. Eldfell Volcano: This volcano has completely transformed life on the island, making it larger with a different landscape, and attracting many tourists. If we are lucky, we might spot puffins. The Westman Islands have the largest population of these birds in the world. Every year, more than 2 million of these cute birds come to the islands to nest, making them the true symbols of the islands.
